Local Field Potential (LFP)

« Back to Glossary Index

The LFP is the electrical field within a volume of tissue produced by the combined action potentials (electric current) from the collective activity of neurons. Every neuron senses electrical field within its local region and fires during the depolarized phase of the LFP. Neuronal inhibition occurs during hyperpolarized phase of the LFP. EEG actually measures the LFP because single neuron discharge is too small to be detected.
